Jacob the Wrestler

That night he and his family passe over the ford Jabbok

When the man did not prevail He touched Jacob’s thigh and it when out of

Jacob’s name was changed to Israel because he was a prince who has power
with god

Jacob’s Daughter
A. Jacob’s daughter (34:1-5)
Dinah went to visit
Dinah is defiled by Shechem son of Hamor
Shechem wants her for his wife
Jacob hears but held his peace
B. Jacob’s sons (34:6-19)
They were very grieved and wroth
Hamor asked for Dinah and offered any dowry
Hamor asked for other daughter’s for marriage and offered theirs
The son’s answered deceitfully
They said we cannot do this the men of Shechem were not circumcised
C. Shechem agrees (34:20-24)
Hamor and Shechem communed with the men in the gate
There is enough room
We will take their daughters to us as wives
All of their possessions will be ours
They all agreed
D. Shechem punished (34:25-31)
After 3 days they were sore
Simeon and Levi took their swords and slew them
They took Dinah out of Shechem’s house
They spoiled the city and took all they had
Jacob said they had made him to stink among the inhabitants
they said “Should he deal with our sister as an harlot” |

Jacob the Traveler
A. The first journey (35:1-15)
• God called Jacob to Bethel to make an altar
• They prepared by placing all their gods and earrings under the oak by
Shechem
• They arrive at Luz, which is Bethel and build the altar because this is
where God appeared to Jacob when he fled from Esau
• Deborah, Rachel’s nurse dies
• Reminder of God’s appearance when he came out of Padan Aram
B. The second journey (35:16-20)
They went to Ephrath where Rachel travailed and had hard labor
Rachel dies giving birth to Benoni, which his father called Benjamin
Jacob sets up a pillar upon her grave
C. The third journey (35:21-29)
They travel to Edar
Reuben lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine
Jacob twelve sons are named
Isaac was 100 and four score years old and died
Esau and Jacob buried him |

Esau’s Family
He has 3 wives
He has to move from Jacob because there is not room for their cattle to
mount Seir
He is called the father of the Edomites

Joseph sold
A. Jacob’s love (vv. 1–4).
Joseph was 17 years old
He brought an evil report of the sons of Bilhah ans Zilpah to his father
He was given a coat of many colors
His brethren hate him and could speak peacefully to him
B. Joseph’s dreams (vv. 5–11).
When Joseph told his dreams they hated him more
First dream
They were binding sheaves ans Joseph’s sheave arose and his brethren
sheaves did obeisance to his sheave
They hated him yet the more
Second dream
The sun, moon and 11 stars made obeisance to him
His father rebukes him
His brethren envied him
His father observed the saying C. Judah’s scheme (vv. 12–28)
• Israel sends Joseph to find his brethren in Shechem and to report on
them
• A man told him they had departed to Dothan where Joseph found them
• When his brethren saw him a far off they conspired to slay him and lie
about it
• Reuben stopped them and said let’s cast him in a pit
• Joseph’s coat of many colors was taken from him and he was cast into a
pit
• While they were eating a company of Ishmeelites from Gilead came by on
the way to Egypt
D. Jacob’s sorrow (vv. 29–36).
When Reuben returns and doesn’t find Joseph in the pit he rents his
clothes
They dipped Joseph coat in the blood of the kid of the goats
They brought it to their father and said they found it
Jacob rent his coat because he knew a wild beast had devoured Joseph
He put sackcloth on and mourned for many days refusing to be comforted
saying he would go down to his grave mourning for his son
The Midianites sold him to Potiphar the captain of Pharaoh’s guard |

Judah’s family
A. Marriage (38:1-5)
Judah married a canaanite wife and had 3 sons
B. Tragedy (38:6-11)
His first son Er married Tamar
Er was wicked and the Lord slew him
Tamar was then married to Onan who refused to have children by her which
displeased the Lord who slew him
Judah sent Tamar to her father’s house
C. Sin (38:12-23)
After being comforted from his wife dying Judah goes to shear sheep
Tamar dresses like a harlot and waits for Judah
He offers a kid from the flock and she asks for a pledge
He sends the pledge but she is gone
D. Judgement (38:24-26)
Judah finds out Tamar is with child and condemned her to be burned
She gives him back his pledge and he acknowledges the child is his
E. Result (38:27-30)
She has twins
Pharez comes out first but Zarah put out his hand first and then pill it

Joseph the Faithful Steward
A. The discipline of service (39:1–6).
Joseph becomes Potiphar’s overseer
The Lord blessed Potiphar’s house for Joseph’s sake
B. The discipline of self-control (39:7–18).
Potiphar’s wife cast eyes upon Joseph and asked him to lie with her
Joseph refused saying it would be a sin against God
She caught his garment and when he refused she accused him of mocking her
and
trying to lie with her
She told Potiphar this lie
C. The discipline of suffering (39:19–23).
Potiphar was wroth and put him in the prison
The Lord was with Joseph and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of
the prison
All of the prisoners were put in Joseph’s hand and the Lord made it to
prosper |

Joseph the Forgotten Servant
A. The Offense (40:1-4)
The butler and the baker of Pharaoh offended him
They were put in prison with Joseph and he was to serve them
B. The Dream (40:5-8)
They both dreamed in one night
They were sad when Joseph came to them the next morning because there was
no one
to interpret their dreams
Joseph told them interpretation belong to God
C. The Interpretations (40:9-19)
The butler dreamed of a vine from which he pressed grapes into a cup and
gave it to
Pharaoh
Joseph interpreted this to mean in three days he would again serve Pharaoh
and asked
him to mention him to Pharaoh
The baker dreamed of baskets on his head that the bird ate
Joseph interpreted this to mean he would be hung in three days
D. The Fulfillment (40:20-23)
On the third day, his birthday, Pharaoh brought both the baker and the
butler and
restored the butler and hung the baker as Joseph had interpreted their
dreams
The butler did not remember Joseph but “forgat” him |
