Abraham pleads for Sodom and Gomorrah
I. Abraham and the three visitors
A. The Lord appeared unto Abraham - v.1-8
1. In the plains of Mamre
a. He sat in the door of the tent
b. In the heat of the day
2. Abraham ran to meet them
a. Bowed himself toward the ground
b. Called him my Lord
c. Called himself servant
3. Abraham offered food and water
a. Wash your feet and rest under the tree
b. I will fetch a morsel of bread
c. They said, so do
4. Abraham arranged for food
a. He told Sarah to make cakes of three measures of fine meal
b. He fetched a tender calf and had a young man dress it
c. This was served with butter and milk
d. Abraham stood by them under the tree while they ate
B. Sarah and the three visitors - v.9-15
1. The visitors asked for Sarah and Abraham said she is in the tent
2. He told Abraham He would return according to the time of life
a. Sarah shall have a son
b. She heard them from the tent door behind them
C. Sarah laughed within herself
1. After I waxed old shall I have pleasure
2. My lord being old
D. The Lord said to Abraham
1. Why did Sarah laugh?
a. She thought she was too old to bear a child
2. He asked, is any thing too hard for the Lord
a. He repeats His promise to return
b. He repeats His promise that Sarah will have a son
E. Sarah denies she laughed
1. She was afraid
2. He said nay, but thou didst laugh
II. Abraham begs for Sodom - v.16-33
A. The men looked toward Sodom - v.16
1. Abraham went with them to send them on their way
B. The plan for Sodom is revealed to Abraham - v.17-21
1. The Lord said shall I hide from Abraham the thing which I do
a. Abraham shall become a great nation
b. All of the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him
c. I know him
1) He will command his children and his household
2) They shall keep the way of the Lord
3) To do justice and judgment
d. That the Lord may bring upon him that which He had spoken
2. The Lord said
a. because
1) The cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great
2) Their sin is very grievous
b. I will go down and see
1) whether they have done according to the cry of it
2) If not I will know
3. The men turned their faces toward Sodom and went
a. Abraham stood yet before the Lord
1) Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
2) Shall not the judge of all the earth do right?
4. Lord agrees that 50, 45, 40, 30 20, 10 righteous souls would be enough to save the cities
a. Abraham describes himself as dust and ashes
b. He asks the Lord not to be angry when he asks
5. The Lord went His way
a. As soon as He left communing with Abraham
b. Abraham returned to his place
