15 - God's Promise of Children
I. Abram's Vision
A. The Word of the Lord comes to him and describes himself as a shield and exceeding great reward
- v.1
B. Abram asked what reward he would give him. I am childless and my steward is Eliezer of Damascus, and my heir is one who was born in my house
- v.2-3
C. The Word of the Lord said not Eliezer but one from his own bowels shall be heir
- v.4
D. He was also told to look at the stars, if he could count them he could count his descendants
- v.5
E. Abram believed in the Lord and it was counted to him for righteousness - v.6
F. The Word of the Lord identified himself as the one who brought Abram out of Ur to inherit this land
- v.7
G. Abram asked how shall I know that I shall inherit it? - v.8
H. The Word of the Lord told him to take a 3 year old heifer, she goat, and ram and divide them; also to take a turtledove and a young pigeon
- v.9-10
I. Abram drove the fowl away from the carcasses - v.11
II. Abram's second visit - v.12-17
A. When the sun was going down a deep sleep and a horror of great darkness fell on Abram

B. He was told that his seed would be a stranger and serve them in a land not theirs and be afflicicated for 400 years
- v.13
C. God would judge the nation they would serve and his descendants would come out with great substance
- v.14
D. Abram was told he would go to his fathers in peace and be buried in a good old age
- v.15
E. He was also told in the fourth generation, they would come hither because the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full
- v.16
F. When it was dark a smoking furnace and a burning lamp passed between them - v.17
III. Covenant between The Lord and Abram - v.18-21
A. The covenant was made the same day - v.18
1. The Lord said unto thy seed have I given this land from the river of Egypt to the river Euphrates
2. The Lord then lists ten tribes who live in the land
a. Kenites
b. Kenizzites
c. Kadmonites
d. Hittites
e. Perizzites
f. Rephaims
h. Amorites
i. Canaanites
j. Jebusites
