What does it mean to stand? We need to know, since we are supposed to do it.DefinitionMerriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary - Standtransitive senses Bible ExamplesMark 3:22-26 - "And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils. And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand. And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end."
I Cor 16:13 - "Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong." Galations 4:31-5:1 - "So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free. Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage." ConclusionBased on similar usage in the examples, and since Eph 6:10 urges us to be strong, and Eph 6:12 tells us we are wrestling, and the purpose of our taking on the Armour of God is to withstand (Eph 6:13), the highlighted definitions would fit the action we are to take. Our goal is to endure, bear up, remain firm, and participate in the fight that we might be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. |
