To make us able to stand, we must gird our loins.  What does it mean to have been girded or girt?

Definition

Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary - Gird

1 a : to encircle or bind with a flexible band (as a belt) b : to make fast (as a sword by a belt or clothing with a cord) c : SURROUND
2 : PROVIDE, EQUIP; especially : to invest with the sword of knighthood
3 : to prepare (oneself) for action
intransitive senses : to prepare for action
- gird one's loins : to prepare for action : muster up one's resources
(Our loins are the upper and lower abdominal regions and the region about the hips)

Bible Examples

Read Judges 3:15-21
Judges 3:16 - " But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh."
Ehud made fast the dagger.  He equipped himself with it.

Read Jer 1:16-19
Jer 1:17
- " Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them."
Jeremiah prepared for action.  He prepared to speak to the people as God commanded.

Read Job 38:1-4 and questions following.
Job 38:3 - " Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me."
Job mustered his resources and strengthened himself to respond to the questions of God in verses 4 and following.  He prepared himself.

Read John 21:2-8
John 21:7 - "Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea."
Peter encircled himself with his coat and made it fast around himself so that it would not come off.

Conclusion

What do we do to have our "Loins girt about with truth"Eph 6:14
1.  Like Ehud, we must equip ourselves with the truth.  We need to have the truth at hand and be ready to use it.
2.  Like Jeremiah, we must use the truth to prepare for action so that we are ready to do what God commands.
3.  Like Job, we must use the truth to fortify and strengthen our resolve so that we are ready for what comes upon us.
4.  Like Peter, we need to encircle ourselves with the truth and make it fast so that we don't lose it.
