I. JESUS AND THE ADULTEROUS WOMAN.  (vv.1-11)

Event

• Jesus teaching (v.2)

Location

• He comes from Mount of Olives to Temple (vv.1,2)

Time

• Early in the morning (v.2)

Those Present

• Jesus and all the people (v.2)

Event

• A woman is brought to Jesus (v.3)

Those Present

• Jesus, all the people, Scribes, Pharisees and the woman (vv.2,3)

Reason

• She was taken in the very act of adultery (v.4)

Challenge

• They reminded Jesus of the Law's requirements that she be stoned (v.5)

• They demanded He pass judgment (v.5)

Reason

• They tempted Him to accuse Him (v.6)

Response

• Jesus wrote on the ground with His finger (v.6)

• They continued to question Him (v.7)
• Jesus said, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." (v.7)
• He stooped down and wrote again (v.8)

Reaction

• -They all left beginning with the eldest (v.9)

Reason

• They were convicted by their own conscience (v.9)

Result

• Only Jesus and the woman were left (v.9)

Question

• Jesus asked the woman where were her accusers? Hath no man condemned her? (v.10)

Answer

• No man (v.11)

Response

• "Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more." (v.11)

II. THE SECOND "I AM"; THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD.  (vv.12-20)

Event

• Jesus teaching in the treasury of the Temple and none arrested Him for His time had not yet come (v.20)

Those Present

• Jesus, people, Scribes and Pharisees  (v.1, 3, 12)

Claim

• "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." (v.12)

Reaction

• The Pharisees denied His claim (v.13)

Proofs

• His Heavenly origin and destination (v.14)

• His relationship with the Father  (v.15,16)
• He did not come to judge, but if He had to His was true (v.16)
• The Father bears witness (v.17,18)

Question

• Where is your father? (v.19)

Answer

• Jesus told them they did know His father (v.19)

III. THE NECESSITY OF FAITH.  (vv.21-30)

Event

• The result of their unbelief shown (v.21-27)
    - caused them to seek him and not find Him (v.21)
    - caused them to misunderstand His teaching  (v.22,25,27)
    - caused them to die in their sins (v.24)

Remedy

• When they would lift Him up (v.28)

Claim

• "I do nothing of myself" (v.28)

Reason

• The Father has not left Him alone (v.29)

• He always does the things that please the Father (v.29)

Result

• Many believed (v.30)

IV. THE POWER OF TRUTH  (vv.31-45)

Event

• Jesus teaching (v.31)

Claim

• "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed" (v.31)

• "Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free" (v.32)

Rejection

• We are Abraham's seed (v.33,39)

• We were never in bondage (v.33)
• We have one father, even God (v.41)

Answer

• "Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin." (v.34)

• I know you are Abraham's seed but you seek to kill me (v.37,40)

V. JESUS CLAIMS TO BE THE "I AM"  (vv.48-59)

Accusation

• Jesus was a Samaritan and hast a devil (v.48,52)

• I have not a devil (v.49)

• "Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death." (v.51)

Reaction

• Abraham and the prophets are dead (v.52)

• Are you greater than our father Abraham? (v.53)

Answer

• My father, whom you say is your God, honors me (v.54)

• You do not know God, but I do and keep his sayings (v.55)

Claim

• Abraham rejoiced to see His day (v.56)

Denial

• How could he have seen Abraham? He was not yet fifty (v.57)

Claim

• "Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am." (v.58)
