Running with Winners - I Corinthians 10:1-13

Introduction:

1. We would rather run with winners than with losers (I Corinthians 9:24-27).

2. The Christian life is like a race.

A. We must learn, practice, run, endure, finish. (Hebrews 12:1-2)

3. Paul wanted the Christians at Corinth to successfully continue & finish the Christian race.

A. The Corinthians possessed some false notions.

1. They had inalienable right.
2. They were invulnerable.
3. They had superior intelligence.
4. Paul used Israel's history to teach some valuable lessons.

Body:

I. ISRAEL'S DELIVERANCE (I Corinthians 10:1-4; Exodus 14:13-20).

A. "All our fathers were under the cloud"

B. "All passed through the sea"

C. "All were baptized into Moses in the cloud & in the sea (analogy).

1. They were baptized into Moses; we are baptized into Christ (Galatians 3:26-27).

a. Deliverer; leader; lawgiver; mediator.

2. They were baptized in the cloud & the sea; we are baptized in water (Acts 8:35-38).

3. Their baptism marked the end of servitude to Egypt & the beginning of freedom in Moses; our baptism marks the end of our servitude to sin & the beginning of our freedom in Christ (Romans 6:3-4; Acts 2:38; 22:16).

4. Their baptism delivered them from the Kingdom of Egypt; our baptism delivers us from the kingdom of darkness (Colossians 1:13).

5. Baptism stood between Israel & salvation; baptism stands between sinners & salvation (I Peter 3:21).

6. Their baptism was an act of faith; our baptism is an act of faith (Matthew 16:16).

D. "All ate the same spiritual food"

1. Manna – the true manna, Christ & His word (John 6:51; 63).

E. "All drank the same spiritual rock"

1. Exodus 17 & Numbers 20 - Horeb & Kadesh.

2. Christ was the source of all spiritual blessings. (Ephesians 1:3)

II. GOD'S DISPLEASURE (I Corinthians 10:5-10).

A. "But with MOST of them God was not well pleased"

1. Their bodies were scattered in the wilderness Numbers 13 - 10 spies.

B. They are examples not to follow (Romans 6:23; Galatians 6:7).

1. They lusted after evil things (Numbers 11:31-33). (Romans 6:12)

2. They became idolaters (Exodus 32:1-9 - Golden calf). (Colossians 3:5)

3. They committed sexual immorality (Numbers 25:1-6 – Midianite women, 24,000 died). (Galatians 5:19-21)

4. They tempted the Lord (Numbers 21:4-5 – Fiery serpents). (Matthew 4:7)

5. They murmured (Exodus 16:2 - Korah, Dathan & Abiram). (Philippians 2:14)

III. PAUL'S APPLICATION (I Corinthians 10:11-12).

A. Remember the object lesson.

B. Remember the warning.

C. Remember the end (II Corinthians 5:21).

D. Remember the truth (I Corinthians 10:12; II Peter 2:20-22).

IV. OUR ASSURANCE (I Corinthians 10:13).

A. There is a way of escape.

1. All temptations are common to man.

2. God is faithful.

3. God provides a way of escape.

a. Matthew 26:41; I Corinthians 6:18; 10:14; I Timothy 6:11; II Timothy 2:22; James 4:7.

Conclusion:

1. We can enter; we can run; we can win the Christian race.

2. But we can do it only with God's help!
