Purity of Speech -
Cursing, Swearing and Euphemisms -
Psalms 24:1-5
Introduction.
1. Sin surrounds us and entices us daily.
Proverbs 4:23 - "Keep
thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."
2. We must be careful of the thoughts of our minds.
Proverbs 23:7 - "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he..."
3. God has told us that we are to control our thoughts
Philippians 4:8 - "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things
are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things
are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if
there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things."
4. We must not allow the curses and vulgarities that are so accepted in our
society today cross our lips
James 3:9-10 - "With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men,
who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed
blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so."
Body.
I. It is easy to sin with our tongues!
A. We must control our tongues
1. If we don’t we are just deceiving ourselves -
James 1:19-26
2. We can escape a great deal of trouble in this life and in the life to come -
Proverbs 21:23
B. We not only must but we can! -
Psalms 39:1
II. Cursing and Swearing
A. Taking the Lord’s name in any irreverent or disrespectful manner is sin!
1. We are to serve God with reverence and Godly fear -
Hebrews 12:28-29
2. Even what we consider an innocent swearing -
Matthew 23:22
3. God said do not take His name in vain -
Exodus 20:7
B. Counting Down the Top Ten Reasons why I swear! (I have no idea who first came up with these)
10. It pleases my mother so much.
9. It is a fine mark of manliness.
8. It proves I have self control.
7. It indicates how clearly my mind works.
6. It makes my conversation so pleasing to everyone.
5. It leaves no doubt in anyone’s mind as to my up-bringing.
4. It impresses people that I have more than an ordinary education.
3. It is a unmistakable sign of culture and refinement.
2. It makes me a very desirable personality among women and children and in
respectable society.
1. It is my way of honoring God who said, ”Thou shall not take the name of the
Lord thy God in vain.” -
James 3:9-10
C. Euphemisms
1. Nicknames we know who we mean (Denny Landon Story)
2. My Lordy, Gosh, Gee Whiz, Darn, What the dickens, For God’s sake, Heavens to
Betsy, For Heavens sake, Good Heavens, etc.
D. Filthy Language is all around us.
1. On the TV, in print, in the movies and in the mouths of sinners who surround
us.
2. God has told us we must put then off -
Colossians 3:8
3. We can not allow this corrupt communication s proceed from our mouths -
Ephesians 4:29
4. We will not if we think on theses things -
Philippians 4:8
III. Other ways we can sin with our tongues
A. Gossip and Tale Bearing
B. Lying and Deceitful Speech
C. Murmuring and Complaining
D. False Teaching
Conclusion.
A. All of us need to be careful in the use of our tongues.
1. Two of the Ten Commandments involve misuse of the tongue -
Exodus 20:7, 16
2. Three of the things God hates involve the tongue -
Proverbs 6:16-19
3. We will have to give account on the judgment day -
Matthew 12:36
B. We must be in subjection to Jesus.
1. We are to bring into captivity every thought -
II Corinthians 10:5
2. We are to bring our bodies under control -
I Corinthians 9:27
3. We are to speak the truth in love -
Ephesians 4:15
