Have you heard that there are those who claim to believe the Bible but also accept modern revelations as equally authoritative to the Bible? For example, Joseph Smith, Mormons; Ellen G. White, Seventh Day Adventist; and Mary Baker Eddy, Christian Scientist; claim their revelations are equal to the Bible. By implication this would mean the Bible is not sufficient to get us to heaven.
However, the Bible clearly claims to be all sufficient; “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17, NKJV) and “as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,” (2 Peter 1:3, NKJV).
We do not need any additions to the Bible. Another attack on the all sufficiency of the Scriptures is the creeds. Consider if the creeds contain more than the Bible they contain too much. If they contain less than the Bible then they do not contain enough. If they contain something different than the Bible then they should be rejected. And, if the contain nothing more or less than the Bible they should be rejected as unnecessary.
People also compromise the all sufficiency of the Scriptures when they confuse themselves into thinking the Holy Spirit has directed them through feelings. Jesus stated, “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” (John 16:13). He was speaking to his disciples who would record for our learning “all truth” that the Holy Spirit would teach them for us to read, study, and obey. Either the Scriptures all sufficient as they claim or they are not. It cannot be both.
