I. THE BETRAYAL AND ARREST OF JESUS. (vv.1-12)

Time

Immediately following the prayer of John 17 and proceeding His trials and crucifixion. (v.1)

Place

Across the Brook Cedron, into the garden of Gethsemane. (v.1)

Judas

The betrayer. (v.2)
Knew the place because Jesus resorted there with His disciples. (v.2)
Received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees.

Jesus

Knew all thing that should come upon Him. (v.4)
Asked, "Whom seek ye?"

Band of men

Answered, "Jesus of Nazareth". (v.5)

Jesus

"I am He"

Band

They went backward and fell to the ground. (v.6)

Jesus

Asked again, "Whom seek ye?"

Band

They answered the same way. (v.7)

Asked if the others could go their way. (v.8)
This was so His prayer would be answered or His saying fulfilled. (v.9)

II. THE TRIAL BEFORE ANNAS. (vv.13-14, 19-28)

Answered, why are you smiting me? Have I spoken evil?. (v.23)

Led Jesus from his house to the hall of judgment where Caiaphas and others would not go into the judgment hall because they would be defiled and not be able to eat the Passover. (v.28)

 

IV. THE TRIAL BEFORE PILATE. (vv.29-40)

 

OUTSIDE: PILATE AND THE JEWS. (vv.29-32)

Pilate

What is the accusation you bring?. (v.29)

Accusers

If he wasn't guilty we wouldn't have brought him. (v.30)

Pilate

Judge him according to your law. (v.30)

Accusers

It is not lawful for us to put any man to death. (v.31)
This is what Jesus prophesied. (v.32)

 

INSIDE: PILATE AND JESUS. (vv.33-38)

Pilate

Asked Jesus, "Art thou the King of the Jews?". (v.33)

Jesus
