John 18 Outline

I. THE BETRAYAL AND ARREST OF JESUS. (vv.1-12)

Time

Immediately following the prayer of John 17 and proceeding His trials and crucifixion. (v.1)

Place

Across the Brook Cedron, into the garden of Gethsemane. (v.1)

Judas

The betrayer. (v.2)
Knew the place because Jesus resorted there with His disciples. (v.2)
Received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees.

Jesus

Knew all thing that should come upon Him. (v.4)
Asked, "Whom seek ye?"

Band of men

Answered, "Jesus of Nazareth". (v.5)

Jesus

"I am He"

Band

They went backward and fell to the ground. (v.6)

Jesus

Asked again, "Whom seek ye?"

Band

They answered the same way. (v.7)

Jesus

Asked if the others could go their way. (v.8)
This was so His prayer would be answered or His saying fulfilled. (v.9)

Peter

Cut off Malchus', the High Priest's servant, right ear. (v.10)

Jesus

Told Peter it was alright He had to obey the Father. (v.11)

Band

Took Jesus and bound Him. (v.12)

II. THE TRIAL BEFORE ANNAS. (vv.13-14, 19-28)

Annas

Father-in-law of the High Priest Caiaphas. (v.13)
Sent Him bound to Caiaphas. (v.24)

III. THE TRIAL BEFORE CAIAPHAS. (vv.13-28)

Caiaphas

High Priest that same year. (v.13)
Gave counsel that one man should die for the people. (v.14)

Peter

Followed Jesus and stood without the door to the palace of the High Priest

Another Disciple

Known to the High Priest. (v.15)
Went into the Palace with Jesus. (v.15)
Came out and spoke to the damsel who kept the door and brought Peter in. (v.16)

Damsel

Asked Peter if he was one of Jesus's disciples. (v.17)

Peter

I am not. (v.17)
Stood with the servants and officers at a fire for it was cold. (v.18)

They who warmed themselves at the fire

Asked Peter if he was one of His disciples. (v.25)

Peter

Denied it. (v.25)

Servant

Kinsman of the one whose ear was cut off. (v.26)
Said, "did I not see thee in the garden?". (v.26)

Peter

He denied it and the cock crew. (v.27)

Caiaphas

Asked Jesus of His disciples and His doctrine. (v.19)

Jesus

I spake openly in the synagogue and temple, ask those who heard. (vv.20-21)

Officer

Struck Jesus with his palm and asked why He spoke to the High Priest this way. (v.22)

Jesus

Answered, why are you smiting me? Have I spoken evil?. (v.23)

Caiaphas

Led Jesus from his house to the hall of judgment where Caiaphas and others would not go into the judgment hall because they would be defiled and not be able to eat the Passover. (v.28)

IV. THE TRIAL BEFORE PILATE. (vv.29-40)

OUTSIDE: PILATE AND THE JEWS. (vv.29-32)

Pilate

What is the accusation you bring?. (v.29)

Accusers

If he wasn't guilty we wouldn't have brought him. (v.30)

Pilate

Judge him according to your law. (v.30)

Accusers

It is not lawful for us to put any man to death. (v.31)
This is what Jesus prophesied. (v.32)

INSIDE: PILATE AND JESUS. (vv.33-38)

Pilate

Asked Jesus, "Art thou the King of the Jews?". (v.33)

Jesus

Asked is this your thought or did someone tell you this?. (v.34)

Pilate

Answered, "Am I a Jew?". (v.35)
Your own nation and chief priests delivered you to me. (v.36)
What hast thou done?. (v.35)

Jesus

My kingdom is not of this world. (v.36)
My servants would have fought if it had been. (v.36)

Pilate

Are you then a king?. (v.37)

Jesus

I am and I came to bear witness unto the truth. (v.38)

Pilate

What is truth?. (v.38)

OUTSIDE: PILATE AND THE ACCUSERS. (vv.38-40)

Pilate

Acquitted Jesus. (v.38)
Offered to release Jesus according to the Passover custom. (v.39)
Called Jesus the King of the Jews. (v.39)

Accusers

They cried for the release of Barabbas a robber, not Jesus. (v.40)

John 18 Questions

They arrested Him.

What is truth?

Why are you here?

How can I be saved?

Crucify Him.

I find no fault in Him.

Go away.

Release Jesus.
