I. THE SETTING (vv.1,2)

Time

• Six days before Passover. (v.1)

Place

• Bethany. (v.1)

Those Present

• Jesus, Lazarus, Mary, Martha and Judas. (vv.1,2,3,4)

Occasion

• A supper for Him. (v.2)

II. THE ANOINTING (v.3)

Who

• Mary.

What

• A pound of ointment of spikenard.
• Very costly.

How

• On His feet.
• Wiped His feet with her hair.

Result

• The house was filled with the odor.

III. THE CRITICISM (vv.4-8)

Who

• Judas Iscariot, Simon's son. (v.4)

What

• It should have been sold. (v.5)
    - Worth 300 pence.
    - Given to the poor.

Comment

• Concerning Judas. (v.6)
    - He did not care for the poor.
    - He was a thief.
    - He had the bag.
    - He bare what was put therein.

Defense

• Jesus said, "Let her alone". (vv.7,8)
    - She kept this against the day of my burying.
    - The poor always ye have with you.
    - Me ye have not always.

Result

• Much people knew he was there. (vv.8-10)
    - They came not only for Jesus. (v.9)
    - They came to see Lazarus whom Jesus raised from the dead.
• Chief priests consulted how to kill Lazarus. (v.10)
    - They thought many believed on Jesus because of him. (v.11)

IV. JESUS COMING INTO JERUSALEM (vv.12-19)

Setting

• Next day. (v.12)

• Much people were come to the feast.
• They heard Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.

Entry

• People took branches of palm trees. (v.13)
• They cried, "Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord".
• Jesus was found sitting on a young ass. (v.14)

Prophecy

• Zechariah 9:9 is fulfilled. (v.15)
• The disciples didn't understand at first. (v.16)
• When He was glorified they remembered they had done these things.

People

• Those who were with Him when He raised Lazarus bore record. (v.17)
• When others heard about Lazarus they met Him. (v.18)

Priests

• They told one another they were prevailing nothing. (v.19)
• They felt the whole world was going after Him.

V. THE GREEKS SEEK JESUS (vv.20-36)

Event

• Greeks desire to see Jesus. (vv.20,21)

• At the feast. (v.20)

• Those who came up to worship at the temple. (v.20)

Request

• They ask Philip of Bethsaida. (v.21)

Result

• Philip and Andrew go to Jesus. (v.22)

Answer

• The hour is come that the Son of man should be glorified. (v.23)
• He explained the necessity of His death. (vv.24-26)
    - Example of a corn of wheat. (v.24)
    - He that loves his life shall lose it. (v.25)
    - Hate life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
