John 1 Discussion

(top)

The Word (1-5)
• Was in the beginning.
• Was with God.
• Was God.
• By Him all things were made. Nothing was made without Him.
• In Him was life. The life was the light of men
• The light shone in darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it.

John the Baptist (6-8)
• He was sent from God.
• He came to bear witness of the Light that all men through him might believe.
• He (John) was not that Light.
• The true Light lighteth every man that comes into the world.

The Word made flesh (10-14).
• The world was made by Him and it knew Him not.
• His own did not receive Him.
• Those who received Him (believed on His name), He gave the power to become sons of God.
• The sons of God were not born of
1. Blood.
2. The will of the flesh.
3. Nor the will of man.
• They were born of God.
• The Word is made flesh and dwells among us.
• The glory of the Word is as the glory of the only begotten of the Father.
• The Word is full of grace and truth.

***************Please Note**********************
Nowhere does John say explicitly that the Word is Jesus Christ. We know that He is but for the purpose of the Bible Bowl, we can't assume it.

John's testimony concerning Christ (15-28)
• Here are some ways John describes Christ:
1. He is preferred before me because He was before me.
2. Of His fulness we have received, and grace for grace.
3. The law was given by Moses but grace and truth by Jesus Christ.
• No man has seen God at any time. The only begotten son (who is in the bosom of the Father) has declared Him.
• The Jews (Pharisees v.24) sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask John,
• "Who art thou?"

I am not the Christ.
• "Art thou Elias?"

I am not.
• "Art thou a prophet?"

No.
• "Who art thou? That we may give an answer to them that sent us."
I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.
• "Why do you baptize if you are not Christ or Elias?"
I baptize with water but there stands one among you whom ye know not. He is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to loose.
• All of this was done in Bethabara beyond Jordan where John was baptizing.

The Next Day (29-34).
• John sees Jesus and calls Him the Lamb of God who taketh away the sin of the world.
• John says that he did not know who Christ was but that He would be made manifest to Israel and that is why he (John) baptized with water.
• Whoever John saw the Spirit descending and remaining upon would be the one who baptized with the Holy Ghost.
• The Spirit descended upon Christ like a dove and it abode upon him.
• After John saw this, He bore record that Jesus was the Son of God.

Two of John's disciples follow Christ (35-40).
• One of these two was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother (v.40).
• John sees Jesus and says "Behold the Lamb of God!" And two of his disciples follow Christ.
• Jesus asks what they are seeking and they ask, "Where dwellest thou?"
• Jesus tells them to, "Come and see." They stay with Him because it was about the tenth hour.

Simon Peter is brought to Christ (41-42).
• Andrew tells Simon, "We have found the Messias."
• Messias = the Christ.
• Peter is the sonof Jona.
• Jesus tells him that he shall be called "Cephas" which means "a stone."

Philip and Nathanael are introduced to Christ (43-51).
• Verse 43 says that "Jesus would go forth into Galilee."
• He finds Philip and tells him to "Follow me."
• Philip, Andrew, and Peter were all of Bethsaida (v.44).
• Philip finds Nathanael. "We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
• Nathanael's response is, "Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?" Philip tells him to, "come and see."
• Jesus calls Nathanael an Israelite in whom is no guile.
• Jesus says that He saw Nathanael under a fig tree before Philip ever went to him.
• Nathanael is convinced and calls Jesus, the "Son of God" and "the King of Israel."
• Jesus tells Nathanael that he will see heaven opened up and angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
