Learn about God from the first Gospel sermon.  Text: Acts 2.

Introduction

1. Give background of Acts 2.

2. It was on this occasion that the first gospel sermon was ever preached.

3. What can we learn about God from Peter's sermon?

Body

I. THE PURPOSE OF GOD IS STATED (Acts 2:22-23).

A. Before the world was ever created, God had a plan for the redemption of man.

1. We were chosen in Him before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:3-5).

2. The first Messianic prophecy occurs right after the first sin (Genesis 3:15).

B. God purposed for Christ to die as a sacrifice for our sins.

1. Christ willingly gave up heaven (Philippians 2:5-8).

2. He willingly endured the pain and shame (Hebrews 12:2).

3. He willingly subjected Himself to the Father (I Corinthians 15:28).

C. God purposed the purchase of the church.

1. Ephesians 3:8-10

2. Matthew 16:18.

3. Acts 20:28.

II. THE PROPHECY OF GOD IS REVEALED (Acts 2:16-21, 25-31).

A. Peter says that the events on the day of Pentecost were a fulfillment of Joel's prophecy (Joel 2:28-32).

B. Peter says that the resurrection of Christ was a fulfillment of David's prophecy (Psalms 16:8-11).

C. Peter says that Christ is reigning now and that fulfills Psalms110:1.

D. Other prophecies revealed.

1. Isaiah 2.

2. Joel 2.

3. Predictions made by Christ (Mark 9:1; Luke 24:49; Acts1:8).

III. THE POWER OF GOD IS DISPLAYED (Acts 2:32-33).

A. Those who crucified Christ thought that they had won a victory.

B. However, God showed His power by raising Christ from the dead.

1. I Corinthians 1:18.

2. Romans 1:1-4.

C. Those who would oppose God will always be defeated in the end.

IV. THE PROMISE OF GOD IS GIVEN (Acts 2:38-39).

A. Peter states that they shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

B. What is this gift?

1. Some think that it was the Holy Spirit Himself.

a. The ability to do miracles.
b. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 6:19).

2. I believe that the gift is salvation.

a. Keeping in mind all that the Holy Spirit had done to bring salvation about.
b. It was the Spirit working through men who brought about all the Old Testament prophecies.

C. This gift was promised to those:

1. Whose hearts had been pricked (Acts 2:37).

2. Who had come to a belief in Christ as the Son of God.

3. Who evidently desired to repent or they never would have asked the question.

4. They are told to be baptized for the remission of sins and they would receive the gift.

V. THE PEOPLE OF GOD ARE SAVED (Acts 2:47).

A. They had a part in receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:40).

B. The promise was to anyone who would call on the Lord.

C. The Lord added them.

D. The Lord added them to the church.

E. The only place where one can find the saved is in the church.

Conclusion.

1. Have you taken advantage of that promise?

2. Have you been added to the church?
