Understand what it means to preach Christ.  Text: I Corinthians 2:1-5.

Introduction.

1. One of the major teachings sweeping through the religious world today is that of the "Core Gospel."

2. This is the teaching that says that one only need to believe in Christ to be a Christian.

3. They tell us that matters of doctrine are not as important and should not be a test of fellowship.

4. They make their argument off of passages such as 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 where Paul plainly says that he determined to know nothing among them except Christ crucified.

5. What does that statement mean?

6. Does it mean that doctrine is not important?

7. We can answer this question by looking at the things which Paul did preach.

Body.

I. Preaching Jesus means preaching the gospel.

A. Part of preaching Christ is preaching the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;  By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures"

B. The fundamental belief in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ foundation of Christianity.

1. John 8:24. "I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins."

2. Hebrews 11:6. "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."

C. Our "Core Gospel" teachers would have no problems with this.

II. Preaching Jesus means preaching obedience.

A. In order to honor Jesus, we must respect His teachings.

B. He taught that obedience was necessary for salvation.

1. Matthew 7:21"Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven."

2. John 14:15"If ye love me, keep my commandments."

C. Paul taught the same thing.

1. 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15"And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.  Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother."

2. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8"And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ"

D. The book of James teaches that same thing (James 2:18).

"Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works."

III. Preaching Jesus means preaching about the kingdom.

A. Look at the preaching of Philip.

1. He preached Christ (Acts 8:5). "Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them."

2. It also says that he preached things concerning the kingdom (Acts 8:12). "But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women."

B. Not only did he preach about the kingdom but he preached about how to get into that kingdom.

1. Acts 8:12 tells us that they were baptized. That was part of Philip preaching Christ.

2. Notice also Acts 8:35-36. "Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.  And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?"

C. You can't teach Jesus without teaching about the church that He died to establish (Acts 20:28).

"Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood."

IV. Preaching Jesus means preaching impending judgment.

A. Christ taught about the Judgment day.

1. Matthew 24:44"Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh."

2. John 12:48"He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day."

B. Paul taught about the Judgment Day.

1. Acts 24:24-25"And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.  And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee."

2. 2 Corinthians 5:10"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad."

C. Peter taught of the Judgment (2 Peter 3:14).

"Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless."

V. Preaching Jesus means preaching doctrine.

A. People sometimes try to argue from 1 Corinthians Chapter 2 that we should only preach about Christ.

B. However, notice all the topics that Paul hits on in the same letter:

1. Chapter 1 deals with division in the church.

2. Chapter 2 deals with apostolic authority and inspiration.

3. Chapter 3 deals with Christ as the foundation of the church and them being carnally minded.

4. Chapter 4 deals again with apostolic authority.

5. Chapter 5 deals with church discipline.

6. Chapter 6 deals with Christians taking their problems before the world.

7. Chapter 7 deals with marriage.

8. Chapter 8 deals with things that were offered to idols.

9. Chapter 9 deals with paying the preacher.

10. Chapter 10 deals with things offered to idols and the Lord's supper.

11. Chapter 11 deals with head coverings.

12. Chapter 12-14 deal with spiritual gifts and the abuse thereof.

13. Chapter 15 deals with the resurrection.

14. Chapter 16 deals with the contribution to the saints.

15. Paul preached not only about Christ but also the doctrine of Christ.

C. Notice these passages.

1. Romans 6:17"But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you."

2. 1 Timothy 4:6"If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained."

3. 1 Timothy 4:13,16"Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.", "Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee."

D. Doctrine is important.

Conclusion.

1. We must preach Christ to the world!

2. But let is not fall into the trap of believing that this means we only teach about Him.

3. To honor Him, we must teach His doctrine.

4. Have you honored Christ?  (See Salvation)
