Some Things Baptism
Will and Will Not Do
- I Peter
3:18-22
Introduction:
1. While some have minimized the importance of baptism, others have over
emphasized it.
2. Some see very little benefit in baptism, while others except far too much
from
it.
3. Let us in this lesson examine what the Bible says about baptism.
Body:
I. Some Things Resulting From Baptism
A. One’s sins are remitted (Acts 2:38).
II. Some Things Baptism Will Not Do
A. Baptism does not remove temptation.
1. The appeal of sin does not vanish when you are baptized.
2. Jesus was tempted after he was baptized (Matthew 4:1-11).
4. Temptation really begins after we are baptized (Ephesians 6:11).
B. Baptism does not make one sinless.
C. Baptism does not guarantee eternal salvation.
1. Salvation is spoken of in two senses.
a. Salvation from past sins (Mark 16:16).
2. A host of passages warn the Christian about losing his salvation.
3. Baptism is not the end of one’s obedience, but the beginning (Romans 6:4).
Conclusion:
1. Baptism is essential. You cannot be saved without it, but baptism “alone”
will not save you any more than faith “alone.”
2. Don’t minimize what baptism can do for you, but on the other hand don’t
expect it to do for you things God never promised in His word.
